In 2011, the GPU worked with media publishers to come up with a benchmark for payment for freelancing. The compliance rate has been impressive. Efforts are ongoing to review the current rate as part of our broader plans to introduce realistic minimum wage standards for the media in the country.
We continue to engage publishers to regularise employment status of media workers, grant social protection benefits for staff, particularly women journalists and provide improved working conditions.
The GPU also gives psychological counselling for journalists in trouble or their families, employment advice to its members, and provision of networking for members and allied associations
