2008: Nine journalists conclude training course

On the first week of February 2008 two Danish journalists came to the Gambia to train nine Gambian journalists through colleague to colleague workshop.

The nine journalists were drawn from various media outlet. The training includes field reporting, online journalism and web-mastering.

The training which was conducted from the 1st to 6th February 2008 by the journalists Irmelin Viegas and Birger Agergaard. It was organized by The Gambia Press Union and funded by the Gambia media support (GAMES) in Denmark. The training, characterized as first of its kind is geared towards training Gambian journalists to make them more professional.

The key areas being discussed during the training on field reporting were the health issues, child abuse, drug trafficking, environmental sanitation, access to markets, and HIV\AIDS, STD and child exploitation among others.
Likewise online journalism and improving the GPU website.

Abdoulie Dibba

Abdoulie Dibba - expressed satisfaction.

Speaking at the end of the training, a participant from the Forayaa Newspaper, Abdoulie Dibba, expressed satisfaction over the knowledge gained during this training course, as according to him the training has given new skills to make him become more professional in the field of online journalism.

Mr. Dibba thanked the organizers of this training and challenged the GPU to be organizing such vital trainings for Gambian journalists as there is no journalism training institution in the country.

 

Abba Gibba

Mr. Abba A.S Gibba, a sub- editor at point newspaper, who also received training on field reporting expressed similar sentiments regarding the training. 

He noted that this training has no doubt improved his skills to become more professional. Mr. Gibba who indicated that this is the first training he has received on journalism even being in the profession for over two years, equally challenged the organizers to expand the training for a good number of journalists to benefit.

He spoke at length the role of journalist which he maintained as very vital and recognized the need for journalist to be well equipped. “As in any field, you have to have the right vital know- how to be a professional,”  he added.
In conclusion, Mr. Gibba urged participants to put the new found skills into practice.

Baboucarr Ceesay

Baboucarr Ceesay - skills can only be developed through training courses.

Baboucarr Ceesay, a staff reporter at Foraya Newspaper also expressed thankfulness to be part of the training in online journalism. He described this development as the way forward.

As believed by Mr. Ceesay, journalists’ skills can only be developed through training courses. He gave as advice that Gambian journalists be committed and dedicated to their work and remain within the limits of the ethics of journalism.

Mr. Ceesay assured the recourse persons that the knowledge gained during the training will be disseminated to those who were not privileged to receive the training.

 

 

Amie Sanneh

Amie Sanneh of Foraya newspaper, the only female participant on field reporting, thanked the GPU for organizing this course. A happy Mrs. Sanneh commended the resource persons, noting that training was quite effective and interesting. 

She assures that the knowledge gained during the training would be put to practice as expected. She finally thanked our collaborators in Denmark for providing the funds for such an important training.

“This training would immensely contribute positively towards the welfare of Gambian journalist,” she added.
