The Gambia Press Union (GPU), with support from the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), is embarking on a sensitisation programme to popularize the Union’s Code of Conduct.
The programme titled “Ethics Caravan” runs from June 21-July 5, 2017, and is aimed at ensuring that media houses and media practitioners throughout the country familiarize themselves with the Code of Conduct..
As part of the activity/programme, the GPU will hold discussion with media houses to raise awareness and understanding on the Code of Conduct and also distribute copies to the media houses/journalists.
The GPU will also use the Ethics Caravan to discuss conditions of service of media workers and also collect data on challenges of specific media houses. This will inform activities and future interventions of the GPU aimed at promoting freedom of expression and strengthening the media landscape.
The Gambia Press Union’s Code of Conduct was reviewed and validated in May of 2016 to meet the increasing need of regulations to promote and guide the work of media houses and media workers in The Gambia. It is purposely design to improve the standard and to serve as the guiding principle of journalistic work in The Gambia.
The GPU therefore hopes that media houses and media practitioners will welcome the Code of Conduct and use that as a guide in their work to ensure a more professional media in The Gambia
We thank all media houses in the Gambia and our partners for their continuous support and collaboration in accomplishing our mandate to serving the interest and welfare of journalists, contribute to national development, and in our pursuit to creating an environment that allows for free press.
