Capacity Building has been the main focus of the GPU. Majority of the practitioners are without formal education in journalism.
Through donor-funded programmes, the GPU thus trains journalists to acquire essential skills in journalism. We also run courses in specialised areas of reporting: women’s rights, children’s rights, human rights, online reporting, cyber security, layout, broadcast journalism, investigative journalism, community journalism, court reporting, freedom of expression and media leadership. These efforts culminated to the setting up of the first journalism institute in the Gambia in 2013, GPU School of Journalism.
We have in recent times expanded our capacity building programme to cover civil society, security forces, lawyers and lawmakers, imbuing in them skills in human rights, communications and freedom of expression.
